The biblical word Shoah (שואה), also spelled Shoa and Sho'ah, meaning "calamity" in Hebrew (and also used to refer to "destruction" since the Middle Ages), became the standard Hebrew term for the 20th century Holocaust as early as the early 1940s.

 

The term holocaust meant “an offering to the gods that was completely burned away.”

Since the end of World War I, in 1945, the Holocaust refers to the deliberate attempt by the Nazi government, in Germany, led by Adolf Hitler, to destroy all the Jewish people who were

in the Nazi controlled territories.
